DEMO Review

by David Sue

Taking their influence from an African folk tale in monkier only, Monkey Steals The Drum's truer reference point lies closer to that of US punk. Sceptics may call this 'grunge-lite', but that would do scant justice to the fractured emotions of Christian Ashcroft's nasally roar. Casting their diligent punk-ethic into soaring anthemics, opener 'My Chinese Burns', is typical stuff: all cathartic vocals, seething guitars and a flurry of brash energy.
